Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd, When is a yacht not a yacht? The
answer is when it comes to Canada to oppose the massive
annual slaughter of baby harp seals. We have had to jump
through Canadian bureaucratic hoops; had our flagship, R/V
Farley Mowat, inspected and surveyed after being
inspected two days prior by the United States Coast
Guard and told that we had no violations; were directed
to hire Canadian commercial-licensed deck officers despite the
fact that the ship does not have requirements for certificated
Canadian crew; and we have had to pay exorbitant fees
just to get to where we are.
The Canadian government has been intent upon increasing
our costs and delaying our campaign. You can read my
full report about our hassles in the news release "Fear
and Bureaucratic Loathing in Halifax, Nova Scotia."
On the positive side, the harassment has resulted in a
great deal of media coverage in Nova Scotia and Canada.
That is, after all, why we are here: to rock the boat
and bring this bloody obscenity of sealing to the
attention of the public.
On Sunday, Sea Shepherd Director and actor
Richard Dean Anderson flew with Peter Brown and myself to the
ice to
photograph the seals. On Monday, our press conference in
Charlottetown, PEI, was successful in getting coverage.
We've also received numerous emails from pro-sealers and
you can read my Reply to a Newfoundlander answering one
of them. Also, in the media coverage, you will see that the
Farley Mowat was diverted to Port Aux Basques,
Newfoundland, after a hull breach was discovered.
First Officer Alex Cornelissen donned a drysuit to dive
into the cold water and located a small, clean hole the size
of a quarter on the bottom of the ship beneath the main
engine. It is an unusual hole and was not made by
contact with ice. Alex was able to insert a temporary
plug into the hole and the flooding has been stopped.
We are currently looking for a drydock that can take us
in order to repair the ship. The unexpected costs
surrounding the damage and repair to the Farley Mowat
are adding up. Drydock costs alone could be well over $25,000.
The bureaucrats have hurt us financially; the demands of
the Canadian government have cost us an extra $35,000.
Therefore, we must appeal to all our members and
supporters for donations.
Out there in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the seal pups
are being born. In less than three weeks the vicious
clubs of the sealers will begin their gruesome work. We
intend to be there. I urge all of you who care about
shutting down this despicable seal hunt to send a donation to
help us cover the costs imposed on us by the Canadian
bureaucrats and to assist us with repairing the Farley
Mowat.
We are as strong as your support. Captain Paul Watson
